The Communication Corner
Parent Effectiveness Training (P.E.T)
For Parents and those who work with children...
"As a parent I often struggled to reach my son and understand his perspective. An incident where I thought his reaction was based on one thing had nothing to do with that - that was just me guessing. For me P.E.T. communication skills allow me to have true compassion for my child, and myself. It helped me fix mistakes as a parent and really hear the depth of everyone in my family. This took 90% of the conflict, misunderstandings and desperation out of parenting. An invaluable gift to any family". – Brenda

Many people having been effected by natural disasters, or global financial crisis or the ripple effect of these, experience stress and trauma. Given the proper resources to deal with our reactions makes a world of difference. Peter Levine highlights the effect that holding trauma in the body has, in this Youtube interview.
Trauma, Somatic Experiencing and Peter A. Levine PhD
Here's a very quick way of dealing with anxiety, trauma or any response that limits our choices of response.
Using Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), which one can describe as acupressure with attitude, we can reprogram the nervous system to feel and experience events, situations, areas of your life that you find difficult, differently. This gives us CHOICE and the freedom to be open to more possibilities. Have a go:
Faster EFT protocol:
Think of the memory. Where do you feel it in your body? Make it bother you.
Now tap on the EB eyebrow point...while saying I release and let go... all sadness, (you can use appropriate words from the list below)
Tap on SB: Side of Eye: I release and let go.... all fears
Tap UE (Under eye): I release and let go.....all emotional traumas
Tap CB (Collar bone): e.g: I think I’m not worthy of having money; it's time for me to let this go
Grab your wrist, take a deep breath in, then out......say PEACE (and go to your peaceful place.)
Check in and if still bothered, keep tapping.
Change the memory.

The Parent within the Child
When we have difficulty with each other in relationship, we often struggle with the characteristics that are demonstrated in our partner that we are challenged with, within our child. They are a part of their father or mother; therefore they automatically have some of those characteristics. The more we struggle with those characteristics, the more they seem to appear – why? What we resist we empower.
So how to address this - to love the challenging characteristics in your partner or ex-partner and thus in your child?
The more you judge your partner or ex-partner and verbally criticize them in front of the children, you a literally judging and criticizing them. They are you and their other parent. For instance if a couple separate, the parents are still one within the child. Children side with the partner being criticized and become them, in a bad way (i.e. take on their negative characteristics, out of loyalty, (why so we get to love that part of us).

Find that part in you and Love it. It’s called: Ho’oponopono by Dr Ihaleakala Hew Len, a Hawaiian technique. (Click here for further information). Simply put: Look at the other and find those parts that you have great difficulty with. Then find them in yourself, maybe you do this to yourself or others in some way and then. Apologise within your minds eye to that person for creating that person to show you that part in yourself. Apologise to that part in yourself for not loving it fully. For example: I am sorry, I love you. I am sorry I love you. Follow that loving movement in your mind. Turns out that loving yourself is the greatest way to improve yourself, and as you improve yourself, you improve your world.
Find that part in your childhood. In order to create people and situations in our lives means there is a resonance with an old subconscious pain body. One that is often linked to childhood, where we didn’t have the resources at the time to stick up for ourselves, leave home, tell our parents they may need to go see a counsellor. Instead we often shamed and blamed ourselves. Problem is, this gets displaced down the track – onto our partners and children. Talk to your inner child and ask it how was it for them as a child and did anything like what is happening now, happen then. Like the images that come, and love them into today. See EFT above for more resources.

Parenting for Social Change by Teresa Graham Brett
Parenting for Social Change debunks the myth that control is an essential parenting tool using current research. It challenges us to think about our mainstream views of childhood and how those views perpetuate control and coercion of children.

The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter, & Miracles by Bruce H. Lipton Ph.D
The implications of this research radically change our understanding of life. It shows that genes and DNA do not control our biology; but instead, DNA is controlled by signals from outside the cell, including the energetic messages emanating from our positive and negative thoughts - a major breakthrough, showing that our bodies can be changed as we retrain our thinking.
